MINUTES FROM JUNE 9, 2010
The meeting opened at 7:05 p.m. The minutes from the May 12th meeting were approved as read with a motion by Loren Jeanneret and seconded by Steve Curtis.
Capt. Toledo from East Patrol was present and said that the main problem in our area still remains burglaries. The police dept. is working very diligently on identifying suspects and finding out where they live. He advises people to remain alert and to call the police if they see anything suspicious.
Officer Ruben Rodriguez gave a presentation entitled CPTED---Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design. It was very helpful and many people present asked questions on how they can improve their own property. One thing that was pointed out is that street numbers (your address) have to be five inches high (the smaller numbers that most of us have were grandfathered in) but you at least have to have the numbers visible from the street. Samantha Silveira brought up the fact that she parks in a garage in an alley and asked if the garages should have numbers. Officer Rodriquez thought that that was a great idea, and would be very helpful to the police.
Senator Chris Steineger spoke about some legislative related issues. The state wide sales tax of 1% increase goes into effect on July 1st. The no smoking law also goes into effect at the same time. The seat belt law takes effect where everyone in the car must wear a seatbelt and you can be pulled over for only a seat belt violation. He mentioned other budget issues and discussed the progress of his apartments for seniors at 10th & Orville. He also mentioned that he is a candidate for Secretary of State.
Steve Curtis mentioned that the Fiesta that CHWC was going to sponsor had to be cancelled because of bad weather. Plans to reschedule are not in the works at this time. He also discussed the community garden and told us that several groups have volunteered at the sight and much work has been completed. He is looking to have several more individuals volunteer throughout the summer.
Patty discussed the concerns from the May meeting and came up with a proposed handout for the neighborhood residents entitled “Did you know” where it lists many rules, laws and general guidelines for our neighborhood. It will be passed out with the assistance of volunteers sometime this summer also.
The next meeting is scheduled for July 14, 2010 at 7:00 p.m.
The meeting adjourned at 8:10 p.m.
