MINUTES FROM SEPTEMBER 10, 2008 MEETING

The meeting opened at 7:05 p.m. The minutes from the July meeting were approved with a motion by Nancy Burns and seconded by Mary Clevenger.

The following announcements were made: Our social night was a success on Aug. 13th. In lieu of our regular meeting, we had a cookout and invited our police officers to show our appreciation for all they do for us. We had a crowd of around 50, and everyone seemed to have a good time. We did have leftover hotdogs and buns which we donated to the Cathedral Fall Festival. The CABA parade is Saturday, Sept. 13th. We are still planning on working on the community garden, but didn’t get around to purchasing tools or plants this year. We will start in early spring and get this going. We have ordered magnets with our website and meeting information. They should be available at the next meeting. Don’t forget the website is www.kckcna.org. Brian Hinkle has worked very hard to get this up and running.

Community Police Officer Ruben Rodriguez gave a report and followed up on some problems that were reported on 16th & Barnett, and more prostitution activity in the neighborhood. He has contacted the manager of the apartments in the 400 block of N. 18th and is asking for his help in kicking out the people that don’t belong there.

Senator Chris Steineger gave a brief overview of the past session of the Kansas legislature. He also talked about a new apartment building at 1040 Lowell for seniors 55 and older. He and his wife actually own the building and are trying to get it going. It is on the historical register, so they have to maintain a lot of the structure as is, but have gutted the entire inside and are working on this project. They will be 1 and 2 bedroom units and will run in the $550-$625 range per month.

Tom Reynolds from CHWC who was our neighborhood coordinator, has taken another job so CHWC is looking for his replacement to work with us.

George Breidenthal who owns the property on the corner of 14th & Orville (old confectionary) has a Court date of October 1st, for code violations. Anyone that can attend is urged to do so by the codes officer who has been working very hard to get this property fixed up.

Our guest speakers were Jim Moran and Derrick Oakley from Amerprise Financial, discussing financial and estate planning They gave us an overview of what people need to avoid probate and how best to prepare for the future. They are available for consultation and service.

Everyone is urged to fly their flags on Thursday, September 11th . We are also looking for ideas for speakers for our meetings, so if anyone wants a particular topic addressed, please let Patty know.

The next meeting will be Wednesday, October 8, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. in the Cathedral Parish Center.

The meeting adjourned at 8:00 p.m.
