MINUTES FROM OCTOBER 8, 2008
The meeting opened at 7:05 p.m. The minutes from the September 10, 2008 meeting were approved with a motion by Anne McDonald and seconded by Tom Boeding.
The following announcements were made. Patty has attended meetings at the East Patrol Advisory Board, the Liveable Neighborhoods, and CHWC Ambassadors. From these meetings she is able to report back to the group with several announcements. There are new eaterys opening, with Wheat State Pizza at 5th & Barnett, JAWALI at 6th & Sandusky in the old Amy Renee Bakery building and The Songbird, across from the Public Levy. Jody Boeding advised that she has eaten at all of these places and recommends them. Officer Rodriguez and Tom Boeding suggested that perhaps Jody become our neighborhood “taster” and report to us on good places to eat. Kirk Suther from Operation Brightside informed Liveable Neighborhoods that there is a new recycling program starting for public events. They will provide recycling bins for any public event. We could for example use them for our fall festival. Channel 2 is now operating as the UGTV with updates and announcements. Congressman Dennis Moore has opened an office in Wyandotte County—phone number is 621-0832. The Granada Theatre is now home to Imago Dei Arts Campus and many events are being planned. The Area Agency on Aging is a vital service to the older residents of Wyandotte County. They have many services to offer and Patty has a publication on their services if anyone is interested. There will be a Family Health and Wellness Expo at the Jack Reardon Center on Saturday, November 1st from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It is all free, with health screenings, health and wellness activities and games. It was announced that there will be a benefit for Mark Leonard, a former employee of CHWC to raise funds for expenses incurred due to his illness and that of his son. Donations are appreciated.
Officer Ruben Rodriguez presented a lengthy written report to Patty for review if anyone is interested in what he does during his day. He reported that he had followed up on several complaints forwarded to him by our group, and we just need to contact him if we have any concerns. Patty reported that it was announced at the East Patrol Advisory Meeting that overall, major crime is down 35% in KCK this year, although our homicide rate is up dramatically over last year. Patty also stated that some residences are holding more than 2 garage sales per year. Particularly, two households on 16th street are having them weekly. She asked Officer Rodriguez to look into this, and will contact him when they have another one.
Marty Thoennes from CABA announced that they are looking for scholarship applicants for their annual award. If anyone knows of a student interested in applying, you can contact Marty at CABA. He also announced that CABA has a small fund for minor home repairs for seniors 65 and older. They must be the home owner. He also announced that Ball’s Sun Fresh is due to open at Prescott Plaza sometime in November. There are several other businesses going in, such as a Pizza place, a Mexican Restaurant, a hair salon and dry cleaners. They are due to open after Balls.
The Community Policing Grant application is due November 7, 2008. Last year we received $400.00 which was used for magnets announcing our website (www.kckcna.org). The magnets are available at this meeting, and Patty has them if anyone is interested. We also used the funds for the maintenance of this website. Patty asked for suggestions for this grant application. It was agreed that we would like to purchase tools for our community garden. A suggestion was made by Tom Boeding that perhaps we could get a marker in honor of Yelena Guzman and place it at the community garden or even at Waterway Park. Patty will look into this with the UG.
The annual Downtown Holiday Festival will be November 21st at City Hall. Our group will again decorate a tree. If you would like to help, please contact Patty.
CHWC is sponsoring a get together on January 28, 2009 at Corona Cantina at the Legends. Everyone is encouraged to attend and get to know neighbors in all of our community groups. The cost will be what you eat and drink.
There will be no meeting in November and December. Patty stated that she would be out of town during the time we would normally meet in February, so it was agreed that our next meeting will be Wednesday, January 14, 2009.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:00 p.m.
